The Fifth Annual Israeli Apartheid Week March 1 – 8, 2009
Mark your calendars – the 5th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week will take place across the globe from March 1-8, 2009!
First launched in Toronto in 2005, IAW has grown to become one of the most important global events in the Palestine solidarity calendar. Last year, more than 25 cities around the world participated in the week’s activities, which also commemorated 60 years since the expulsion of the Palestinian people from their homes and land in 1947-1948. IAW 2008 was launched with a live broadcast from the South African township of Soweto by Palestinian leader and former member of the Israeli Knesset, Azmi Bishara.
This year, IAW occurs in the wake of Israel’s barbaric assault against the people of Gaza. Lectures, films, and actions will make the point that these latest massacres further confirm the true nature of Israeli Apartheid. IAW 2009 will continue to build and strengthen the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement at a global level.
Waltz with Bashir

“Waltz with Bashir” is een Israelische animatiefilm van Ari Folman over de oorlog in Libanon van 1982. De film kreeg tegen de verwachting in geen Acadamy Award. Volgens Bradley Burston heeft dit alles te maken met de manier waarop joden in Hollywood worden gezien. “Waltz with Bashir is niet gemaakt voor Hollywood, maar voor menselijke wezens” (Burston). Alleen films over de Holocaust met de stereotype jood als slachtoffer zijn verzekerd van succes.
Kate Winslet over haar rol in The Reader: “Ik doe het omdat ik heb gemerkt dat als je een film maakt over de Holocaust, je verzekerd bent van een Oscar. Ik ben vier keer genomineerd. Nooit gewonnen. De hele wereld vraagt zich af “Waarom heeft Winslet er nooit een gewonnen?” Daarom doe ik het.”
Gideon Levy was aanvankelijk overdonderd door de artistieke kwaliteit van de film. Pas toen hij de film weken later opnieuw zag kon hij zich op de inhoud concentreren. En die viel uiteindelijk erg tegen. Er is de horror van de oorlog, maar de Libanese bevolking en Palestijnen zijn niet-bestaand. Alsof alleen de agressor zelf – Israel – de gruwelen van de oorlog ondergaat. Ook Ibish zit op die lijn. De film geeft een bijna klinisch beeld, zonder een hint voor een oplossing of oorzaak. Pas aan het eind komt er een stukje over de echte mensen; Levy: “Niet diegenen die een psychiater en een borrel nodig hebben om hun ervaringen te verwerken, maar zij die voor altijd van alles verstoken blijven, zonder thuis, zonder armen of benen. Geen borrel of psychiater kan hen helpen. En dat is het eerste (en laatste) moment van waarheid en pijn in “Waltz with Bashir”.”
